Come celebrate another great season at

allowed us to stay open an additional 4 hours (12-8 pm) on Wednesday August

The $200 that they are charging us
for those extra 4 hours are well worth it!
The Norwood Day Parade
July 22, 2008
WE WON IT!!!!!
Our tribute to the Norwood community took
first place at the Norwood Day Parade. Santa Claus came back from his
vacation in Hawaii. He brought with him the Hawaiian Princess and her
court. They stopped at Burwood Pool and picked up the Burwood Pool
children and their parents in his summertime sleigh, driven by
seahorses. We all rode down Montgomery Road waving and calling out to
the crowd, "Thank you Norwood - Burwood Pool is the best gift ever!"
The "Seahorse power" behind the sleigh
was a flatbed truck driven by Randy Huber of Huber Lumber. Bud and Randy
Huber were a great help to all of us in the building of our float. Bud
had some good advice about the kind of lumber we needed to use. Randy
came to the pool early and was a great help in putting the float on the
truck. He had as much fun driving the float as we did riding in it.
A very big Thank YOu to Tom Hensley,
Rhoda Hensley's son, for assembling the parts of the sleigh together. We
could not have done it without you, Tom!
Thanks, also to Shannon Palmer for
leaving work early to be our beautiful Hawaiian Princess.
Of course, we could not have built the
sleigh without all the help from Sue Madden, Rhoda Hensley, Kayla
Bennett, Robbie Downy, Pat Jones and Rebecca Schaen who
helped to organize and work the yard sale at Burwood on July 11. A big
THANK YOU to all who came to shop and donate money. The sale generated
over $600 to buy materials for the float.
After the yard sale, we had only 10 days
to build the float. None of us had ever built a float before! But, with
the help of the creative minds of Rebecca Schaen and Pat Jones, (with a
lot of input from the Burwood kids) we came up with a winning idea. We
worked hard in the heat to get the float done on time. The kids pitched
in and helped us paint the float, glue fish and cotton ball bubbles.
They helped us glue in the tissue paper to make the "Thank you Norwood"
sign, and much more.
I can honestly say that with the building
of this float I have done things that I have never done before. I could
never have imagined myself cutting out a sleigh with my husband's
jigsaw, but I did it.
All of us learned something new. It was a
great adventure with a very happy ending. But most importantly, our
Burwood Kids felt a sense of pride riding on that float and thanking
Norwood residents for their support.
Happy 4th of July!....................
All of the Burwood
Pool families would like to wish all of the families in Norwood a safe
and happy Independence day celebration.
Attendance
Update....................
Even with all of the
rainy and cooler days that we have had lately, our attendance is still
holding at an average of 57 swimmers a day.
Watermelon Fest
Friday was great fun for everyone who participated. Rebecca had
watermelon games, contests, crafts and treats to entertain all the
children.
Help us to build our float for the Norwood Day Parade.
It will cost us
approximately $400 to create the float. We gathered ideas from parents
and kids alike. We have decided that our float will be "Santa's
Summertime Sleigh," complete with a Hawaiian Princess and her court. Of
course, Santa will be driving his sleigh in his Hawaiian Vacation
attire. The purpose of the Burwood Parents Committee float this year is
to sincerely thank Norwood residents for your support in keeping Burwood
pool open for our children. So the title of the entry is "Thank You
Norwood - Burwood Pool is the Best Gift Ever."
To
help us pay for the float we are having a yard sale at Burwood Park on
Friday, July 11 from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm. Everything is priced to
sell. Donations are very much appreciated!
We will have lots of
kids clothes, movies and books, dolls and doll clothes, toys, kitchen
stuff, and much more. The Burwood kids are so excited to work on and
ride in the float this year. We would like to thank Bud Huber of
Huber Lumber for donating the use of the flatbed truck for the float. We
would also like to thank his son Randy for volunteering to drive the
truck in the parade.
We would like to
thank Mayor Tom Williams for the new Picnic Table. The kids now have
someplace to eat on instead of the grass. Thank you also to Councilman
Steve Thornbury for donating money for the remaining Burwood T-Shirts so
that kids could wear them in the parade. Another thank you to Jenny
Wallace for seeing to it that we got a picnic permit to have our yard
sale on July 11.
Norwood Graffiti
Problems..............
We would like to thank Bill Graff and
the COPP for their efforts in removing graffiti from Burwood Pool and
other places in Norwood. If you notice graffiti in your neighborhood,
please call the Norwood Police Department at 458-4520. For more
information see
http://www.citizensforabetternorwood.blogspot.com/ (Citizens
for a Better Norwood Blog).
Attendance
News....................
Out of the 12 days
that Burwood has been open (including Sat & Sun last week) our
attendance has been outstanding. We had 3 "bad weather" days of
thunderstorms, etc. Even with that we averaged a total attendance of 571
swimmers. That's an average of over 63 swimmers per day that the pool
was open!
We have received
our goal from Mayor Williams. He told us last week that if we can
maintain an average of 60 swimmers per day then the city will "spend the
money" to upgrade and improve Burwood Pool next year.
So please show your support and come swim at our very cool pool.
Fun
Fridays.....................
Our "Potluck
Picnic" was a rousing success. The hotdogs, macaroni and potato
salad were flying onto plates. We served over 100 people on that very
hot day. We want to thank Mike for being the fastest hot dog griller on
the planet and to Sue for the macaroni salad and Joy for all the juice
she brought for the kids. Also, thanks to Pat for the mac & cheese (it
was the first thing to be devoured) and to Rhoda for the veggies and
dip. To everyone who helped out and brought food, it was much
appreciated. We had a great time picnicing, meeting new friends and
planning for future events.
"Marvelous Me
Week" was a great success thanks to Rebecca Schaen. The crafts and
projects that she designed got rave reviews from all the children. The
children made picture frames and stands on Monday, collages with mirrors
in them on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday were devoted to making
marionettes. On Friday the children got to make Bobbleheads and puzzles
of themselves, as well as decorating sugar cookies to look like them. It
was a lot of fun for everyone., Thank you, Rebecca for all of your hard
work!
Please don't forget to go to the Burwood Pool Blog (link on front
page) to express your opinions, etc. about the pool and everything that
is happening!
